The elite families of Japan, China, and Korea were once known to plant several foxglove trees upon the birth of a girl. When the daughter is ready to marry, they cut down the tree and make a dowry chest, furniture and other items out of it for wedding gifts. Ancient lore foretold that if people planted a foxglove tree near their house, the legendary Phoenix would come across their land and bring prosperity and wisdom to them. The foxglove trees have qualities that are almost magical, and one can see how those qualities could reflect the hopes of young parents for their baby girl as she grows into adulthood.
