Imari large vintage porcelain plate in red, blue, green, and yellow with foxglove tree pattern

Plate is 18 inches diameter. Ships in a rustic wooden box with Japanese lettering.

This plate was hand-painted in both pastel colors and a robust red. Various aspects of a foxglove tree are rendered in a delicate botanical pattern. The elite families of Japan, China, and Korea were once known to plant several foxglove trees upon the birth of a girl. The foxglove tree is also known as the kiri tree, paulownia tree, empress tree, or princess tree. This would make a meaningful gift.

Imari ware is a type of Arita ware traditionally made in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, northwestern Kyushu. They were exported to Europe extensively from the port of Imari, Saga, between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The name therefore derives from the port of export. Imari ware has been continuously produced up through the present day.
