These plates conjure imaginings of a time and place faraway, with hand-painted renderings of mountains, cliffs, buildings, and trees. The palette includes red, blue, green, and brown on a white background. These plates would truly be conversation pieces at a creatively set dinner table, or they could grace a china cabinet with their rich colors and images.

Namasu is a Japanese dish consisting of thinly sliced uncooked (nama) vegetables and seafood, marinated in rice vinegar (su) for several hours, pickling them slightly. Namasu was brought to Japan from China during the Nara period (710-794). These dishes were specifically designed to serve namasu.

Imari ware is a type of Arita ware traditionally made in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, northwestern Kyūshū. They were exported to Europe extensively from the port of Imari, Saga, between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The name therefore derives from the port of export. Imari ware has been continuously produced up through the present day.
